Lalita Tademy, whose first book, Cane River, was rejected 13 times before being published and eventually chosen as an Oprah Book Club selection, talks about her new book published this January, Red River.
Tademy discusses with Borders Book Club what troubled her the most with writing Red River. “I worried that the subject matter was harsh and it was very difficult and whether people would have a tolerance to be able to read through these horrific events that really happened. And it’s why the book is in two parts. I wanted to recreate the foundation event which was the Colfax Riot, the Colfax Massacre. Then I wanted to create part two, which was people picking themselves up from that.” She also goes into depth about the characters and influencing factors that pushed her as she wrote Red River.
